Tamara Stenn: Developing KUSIKUY – Making Ourselves Happy

5 December, 2014 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

For 18 years Tamara Stenn has been working with indigenous women of the Bolivian Andes Mountains to create hand knit alpaca clothing for export markets.  This talk will explore the behind the scene dynamics of this relationship. It will follow how knitters went from a “mother’s club” development project to knitting for the world’s top designers.  And also look at the knitters and herders themselves.  The alpaca fiber comes from small family herds that graze free-range over remote mountain-sides.  Items are knit at home, creating a very personal experience.   Women say they knit their hopes, joys and sorrows into each piece.  KUSIKUY, which means “make yourself happy” in the women’s native language of Quechua, is available in Brattleboro at Black Mountain Traders on Putney Rd. and the Equilibrium pop up shop on Main St.
