Using Art to Counter Subconscious Racism

29 July, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

The Brattleboro Reformer recently reported, “New reports show stark racial disparities in VT policing and incarceration rates.” Visiting artist and activist from Mississippi, Kirina Knight will talk about The Power of Art: Creating Effective Cultural Change – how art and media are contributing to subconscious racism and resulting in a culture of fear, division, and racially motivated violence. Kirina will discuss the motivations behind racism, why protesting is not the solution, and how to effectively create change in our communities and throughout our culture. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kirina holds a degree in Art, African American Studies and Theatre from the University of Mississippi. Kirina is a Reiki Practitioner and Portrait Artist; she leads workshops in personal and community transformation. Her website is www.SpottedArtist.com.
