JUNE Gallery in the Garden features Albert Maguire’s Cow Paintings
29 May, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 3 June, 2017 @ 5:00 pmFree
Albert Maguire’s recent paintings were inspired by the work of the Lascaux cave painters, Andrew Wyeth, and the animal portraitist, George Stubbs. This group of paintings was done over the past decade.
The media most often is oil and is based on a method derived from observation of early Dutch and Italian painters. In order to achieve high resolution of individual brush strokes, the paint is applied to a polished gesso surface on wood or on canvas bound to board. The pigment is placed in multiple layers, the final coat with a specially prepared, slow-drying oil.
Historically, cows have co-existed with humans since the beginning of modern civilization. They have provided us warmth and sustenance, clothing and food, shelter and companionship. We so rarely celebrate a species other than our own, one to which we owe so much.
Maguire paints cows to pay homage to an ancient tradition in art and to celebrate a fellow animal who has evolved with us, as we ourselves.
