Seasons, Sunrise and Farms: Photographs by Catherine Lee

Catherine Lee always has her camera. She never stops looking for beautiful pictures and every day she pauses to look. Catherine Lee is influenced by her passion for art history and desire to create fascinating works that imitate the paintings of her favorite artists and capture a moment in time.

“For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life – the light and the air which vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value.” Claude Monet

Monet was the leader of the French Impressionist movement. He was an artist obsessed with light. He painted in the open air and captured natural light. He is known for his series, in which his observations of the same subject, were viewed at various times of the day and captured in numerous sequences of paintings. (The story of painting)

Catherine Lee is fascinated with this artistic study of the changing effects of light. She often photographs the same landscape at various hours of the day, in different weather and different seasons. She loves how light changes color, changes shadows, changes mood and creates an entirely different photograph with the same subject.

Andrew Wyeth is one of America’s best-known realist painters of the 20th century. He created canvases imbued with the mysteriousness of the real world, thus challenging traditional notions of reality. Wyeth rendered scenes of his everyday life. ( Art in Story)

“I think one’s art goes as far and as deep as one’s love goes. I see no reason for painting but that. If I have anything to offer, it is my emotional contact with the place where I live and the people I do.” Andrew Wyeth

Catherine loves this quote from Andrew Wyeth because it explains where his passion came from and the reason for his paintings. He painted what he loved.

Catherine photographs what she loves, especially the Massachusetts valley. She feels blessed to live here and sees beautiful farms and breathtaking landscape. Her favorite time of day is sunrise and sunset because it is a gift of a new day and a gift of another day. She’s had 10 more years of days since her battle with Sarcoma and will forever notice every sunrise and every sunset and be grateful. This is the reason for her pictures. She wants to capture the beauty around her and share it so you can see what she sees and enjoy a moment in time.

These photographs are part of her daily life as she drives to various places around the valley. Catherine has lived in the valley since she was five and these beautiful barns and farms, fields and mountains are her everyday life. They are home.

Claude Monet and Andrew Wyeth are two of her favorite painters and they have influenced how she looks through the lens of her camera and how she thinks about the subjects and compositions of her work.
