“Honoring the Children of Aleppo”: Recent works by Lori Schreiner
The paintings in this show are inspired by photos posted online and in newspapers over the past year. Photos of Syrian boys and girls behind barbed wire, in refugee camps, amid bombed out buildings. A boy being evacuated from Aleppo on a bus flashing the peace sign. A teenager sitting on the ground outside a field hospital keening over his father’s body wrapped in a turquoise blanket. And Omran rescued after an airstrike in Aleppo sitting alone on an orange seat inside an ambulance.
I wish to also honor the White Helmets who dig through the rubble every day to save survivors and the photojournalists who courageously walk through the war to bear witness.
Lori Schreiner is a painter, writer and social worker. She has studied painting at the Arts Students league in NYC, at the River Gallery School since 1988, and was a member of the Windham Art Gallery. Her work has been shown in NYC and local venues in VT. Her writing has appeared in The Best of Write Action 1 and 2. Twenty-six of her paintings appear in a collaborative book with the poems of Theresa Senato Edwards called Painting Czeslawa Kwoka, honoring Children of the Holocaust, which won the Tacenda Literary Award: Best Collaboration, 2010 for “Last Look.”
The Fourth Corner Foundation, a non-profit founded by Robert Shannon, has a selection of paintings collected by the foundation from their gallery/museum/library in Windham, VT. It is dedicated to providing a physical institution where creative ideas concerning sustainable practices are paramount. The property serves as a gathering place for interested parties to discuss ideas, design projects, attend conferences and experience an inspiring combination of art, architecture and gardens.
