Join legendary folk musician Richie Havens in the third annual Strolling of the Heifers New England Farm Relief Concerts!
There will be two great shows - on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Lebanon Opera House, Lebanon, NH, and on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Latchis Theatre, downtown Brattleboro, Vermont.
Both shows are at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are priced at $45, $35 and $25. Following the Brattleboro show, there will be a post-concert reception, with tickets available at $15 in combination with any ticket level.
Opening the shows for Richie Havens will be Canadian folk duo Dala, whose song "Horses" was named one of the top 10 folk songs of 2009 by National Public Radio.
The concerts benefit the Strolling of the Heifers Microloan Fund for New England Farmers, which addresses the difficulty many New England Farmers have in obtaining loans to sustain and improve their farm businesses.
Strolling of the Heifers, based in Brattleboro, is dedicated to saving family farms by connecting people with the food they eat. In partnership with The Carrot Project, in 2008 it launched the pilot phase of the Microloan Fund, which addresses the credit needs of farmers not able to borrow elsewhere. In 2009, pilot phase loans were extended to a variety of farms in Vermont and Western Massachusetts. The Microloan Fund is now expanding to offer loans in all of New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts.

"Finding an operating loan [for our farm] has proven to be extremely difficult — any suggestions?"
—Laurie & Randall, Vermont farmers, 2008
Strolling of the Heifers is responding to Laurie’s and Randall’s question with a resounding “Yes!” In partnership with Chittenden Bank and The Carrot Project, we have created The Strolling of the Heifers Microloan Fund for New England Farmers.
The mission of the fund is to address the difficulty that some New England farmers have in obtaining credit for projects that improve their operations and increase their income, as well as for emergency needs.
Several sources contributed initial capital for The Microloan Fund for New England farmers: four “Farm Relief” benefit concerts generously given by the legendary folksinger Pete Seeger, his grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, and bluesman Guy Davis in September, 2008 and by the Paul Winter Consort in September, 2009; major grants from the Thomas Thompson Trust and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters; and private investments made through The Carrot Project.

That's a question we're often asked. The answer is simple:
A heifer is a young cow who has not yet had a calf of her own. And who is very cute, as you can see.

Strolling of the Heifers is unrelated to Heifer Project International, but both organizations care about farms, farming, and farm animals including heifers. Photographer Erik Hoffner, of Ashfield, Mass., traveled to Poland recently to document the heritage breeds of farm animals that Heifer Project International is working to save from extinction, and the struggling small farms to which the animals have given new hope.
His pictures will be on view at the Vermont Center for Photography in Brattleboro during January; we recommend a visit! This solo show features dozens of gorgeous enlargements captured with black & white film and also some color digital images.
- Opening Reception Friday, January 8th, 5:30-8:30 PM (Part of Brattleboro Gallery Walk)
