  • The Reformer's 2009 Strolling of the Heifers video.
  • For those on tight schedules, the entire Parade condensed into a five-minute video.
  • Bob Audette's report on the Parade in the Brattleboro Reformer: "After standing in the morning sun watching nearly 100 cows stroll by, thousands of spectators streamed to the town common and to the Retreat campus to partake of cold water and milk, cheese, sausage and onions, funnel cakes, chutney, chocolate, bread, maple-flavored cotton candy and ice cream."
  • A story by Jessica Arriens in the Sunday Keene Sentinel, highlighting the Future Chef's pavilion at the Dairy Festival:  "Underneath a small white tent, amid the tables and vendors set up north of the parade, were some 4th-graders accomplishing one of the event’s stated goals: 'to educate the public, and especially school children, about the importance of sustainable local agriculture.' They were the Green Team from Green Street School in Brattleboro."
  • Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Roger Allbee honored at kickoff event (Brattleboro Reformer)
  • Strolling's accomplishments since 2002 (Brattleboro Reformer)
  • Susan Smallheer's reportage in the Times-Argus: "It was a celebration of locally-grown and locally-savored food. At the dairy fest the biggest lines were at the cheese tent, where Vermont cheesemakers offered free samples of their creations, whether it was a sharp cheddar from Grafton or Cabot, a smoked Gouda from Londonderry, a maple-smoked mozzarella from Bennington or tangy chevre from Bridport."

We celebrate youth and recognize Roger Allbee

On Friday evening, June 5, at Brattleboro's historic downtown Latchis Theatre, Strolling of the Heifers Weekend kicked off with A Celebration of Youth in Agriculture.  This fanfare-filled program was sponsored by Key Bank and featured music, dance and audiovisual entertainment.  The presentation included interviews with a dozen young farmers recorded by high school journalism students, plus photography by official Stroll photographer Jason Henske and students at In-Sight Photography.

As well, the organization presented its annual Agricultural Leadership Award to Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Roger Allbee.

In recent years, Strolling of the Heifers has saluted Southern Vermont’s legendary farmers and women in agriculture.  This year, it was time to recognize the next generation — future farmers and other young people who are learning about agriculture and preparing for a farming career.

What's a Heifer?

That's a question we're often asked.  The answer is simple:

A heifer is a young cow who has not yet had a calf of her own.  And who is very cute, as you can see.

Microloan Fund

"Finding an operating loan [for our farm] has proven to be extremely difficult — any suggestions?"

—Laurie & Randall, Vermont farmers, 2008

Strolling of the Heifers is responding to Laurie’s and Randall’s question with a resounding “Yes!”  In partnership with Chittenden Bank and The Carrot Project, we have created The Strolling of the Heifers Microloan Fund for New England Farmers.

The mission of the fund is to address the difficulty that some New England farmers have in obtaining credit for projects that improve their operations and increase their income, as well as for emergency needs.

Several sources contributed initial capital for The Microloan Fund for New England farmers: two “Farm Relief” benefit concerts generously given by the legendary folksinger Pete Seeger, his grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, and bluesman Guy Davis in September, 2008; major grants from the Thomas Thompson Trust and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters; and private investments made through The Carrot Project.
