Two Local Restaurant Chefs to Judge Celebrating Our Roots Recipe Contest; Deadline for Entries Near

Brattleboro - Chefs from two local restaurants will judge the recipes entered in the Strolling of the Heifers’ Celebrating Our Roots Recipe Contest. Tristan Toleno of the Riverview Cafe in downtown Brattleboro is one of the judges. Tristan was raised in Marlboro, Vermont, and graduated from Wesleyan University. He subsequently attended the New England Culinary Institute. He honed his culinary skills at several leading restaurants in New York City before returning to the Green Mountain State where he opened the Riverview Café.
Laurie Merrigan, the chef at Capers in downtown Brattleboro, is the other judge. Prior to opening her own restaurant, Laurie had a catering business for 15 years. She also worked at T. J. Buckleys for over a decade. She previously did course work at the Culinary Institute of America in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Celebrating Our Roots Recipe Contest Deadline is March 15th

The recipe contest deadline is just a short time away. All contenders must submit their entries by Thursday, March 15, 2007, in order to be eligible to win prizes. Both young people (age 18 or under) and adults are invited to submit their favorite recipes for appetizers, entrées, desserts and baked goods. (Recipes submitted by young people and adults will be judged separately) Contest entrants are encouraged to include a brief description of the recipe’s history, particularly if it is an old family favorite or has been handed down by a previous generation. A $200 first prize, a $100 second prize and a $50 third prize will be awarded to the top three recipes submitted by adults. In the young people’s category, a $100 savings bond will be first prize and a $50 savings bond will be second prize.

Recipes must be original and will be judged based on their distinctiveness, taste, appearance, use of local ingredients and ease of preparation. No more than 400 words should be used to describe the recipe and its history. Recipes can be submitted by logging on to: www.strollingoftheheifers.com or www.reformer.com. Both of those Web sites also give additional contest details. Contest contenders may enter as often as they wish.

Contest Winners Will Demo Their Recipes on Gallery Walk Night

The contest winners will be invited to demonstrate the creation of their recipes at a public tasting event at the Hooker Dunham Theater & Gallery on Friday, May 4, 2007. This Gallery Walk Night event is free and open to the public. It will take place from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.

All recipes submitted to the contest that are deemed suitable will be published in the Celebrating Our Roots Cookbook, published by the Strolling of the Heifers in collaboration with the Brattleboro Reformer. Notably, the cookbook will include a section devoted to the favorite recipes of southern Vermont’s leading caterers, as well as inn and restaurant chefs. Advance cookbook orders will be taken at the Sixth Annual Strolling of the Heifers Dairy Fest & Market Place on Saturday, June 2, 2007. The cookbook also will be sold in local bookstores and other retail locations, as well as by mail order.
