Funky Heifer Contest Committee Invites Public to Pull Out the Stops

Brattleboro – The Strolling of the Heifers’ Funky Heifer Contest Committee is inviting the public to really stretch its imagination and dream up more wild and crazy heifers than ever this year. “We want people to engage in our celebration of agriculture by getting creative, getting political or getting just plain silly,” notes the Stroll’s Executive Director Orly Munzing. “The contest’s cash and other terrific prizes are a real incentive for the public to get involved in the fun. First prize is $200, second prize $100, and third prize $50. Over the past few years,” Munzing added “we’ve been impressed by how imaginative people have been at dreaming up all kinds of heifers. Just a few examples are the Trust Company of Vermont’s tongue-in-cheek Cash Cow, covered with fake U.S. currency; a running heifer racing to cross the finish line, created by members of Girls on the Run, and the Statch-Moo of Lickety, paying homage to Lady Liberty, designed by Joanne and Emily Brown.”
Funky Heifers can be made of any material imaginable. Contest entrants are encouraged to add wild hair, a ridiculous hat or outlandish accessories to their creations. Entries must be from four to seven feet tall, and able to stand up on their own or be hung up on the stakes provided by the SOTH. Entries also should be able to withstand windy and/or rain weather conditions. Individuals, families, neighborhoods, businesses, schools and other organizations are encouraged to participate. Entry fee is a $10 donation to the Strolling of the Heifers Educational Fund. To obtain an entry form call Laurie Garland at 802-257-1646 or e-mail her at lgarland@sover.net.  Entry forms also can be down loaded at: www.strollingoftheheifers.com. The deadline to enter is Monday, May, 14.

All the wild and crazy contest entries will be exhibited on the Brattleboro Common. Contest participants will begin setting up their creations on the Common at 4:00 pm on Friday, June 1st. The herd of funky heifers will on view for the public’s enjoyment until 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 2nd. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Main Stage at the Dairy Fest & Market Place on Brattleboro Retreat Healthcare’s grounds on Saturday. See event schedule closer to the date of the event for the exact time. (Winners also will be notified by mail.)

All proceeds raised by the Funky Heifer Contest will benefit the Strolling of the Heifers Educational Fund. Turkey Hill Dairy is the sponsor of the 6th Annual Strolling of the Heifers Parade & Festival. The Brattleboro Reformer and WKVT are the event’s primary media partners.

The mission of the Strolling of the Heifers is to promote awareness of the importance of agriculture in our daily lives and to raise money to fund educationally oriented agricultural programs for youth. Over the past 5 years, the non-profit has raised over $100,000 to underwrite educational programs.
